With the departure of my Head Coach for a new opportunity closer to home, my time with the Mariner Swim Club has reached its natural conclusion.
I do have a desire to return to the sport of swimming. Moreso, I fully intend to coach female athletic teams again soon. Meanwhile, football season is coming! I am focused on bringing Calvert Hall our 12th football championship and 42nd Turkey Bowl victory!
From a professional standpoint, here are two pieces of advice among many others I freely share with other football coaches.
First, learn to coach other sports. I am a better football coach when I coach other sports. When I get better at coaching other sports, I end up being a better football coach. Evidence shows that well-rounded, multi-sport athletes are in the best position to succeed in their primary sport. I believe the same can be said for multi-sport coaches as well.
Second, but of greater importance in my opinion, find opportunities to coach female athletes. I am a much better football coach because I coach female athletes. When I improve as a coach for female athletes, I also improve as a football coach. When I improve as a football coach, I become an even better coach for my female athletes. The cycle feeds itself.
On a personal note, I had a blast coaching on deck with the Mariners. I am grateful for the opportunity. I enjoyed mentoring and supporting my swimmers in competition and outside of it.
I know the feeling is mutual. Among others, seeing my swimmers get together to support me at the Gilman-McDonogh rivalry game last year and celebrate with us on the field after our playoff-clinching victory and rivalry trophy celebration meant more to me than you would realize.
It was also great to spend my birthday with the best athletes in the water at the U.S. Naval Academy for Maryland Swimming Short Course State Championships. We were pretty elite.
I will see you all again soon. I invite you all to come to Calvert Hall’s Friday night home football games and to see us at the Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving! Go Hall!
