This is the feeling I got when Calvert Hall Football won last Saturday night and I won my first championship in a lifetime, fulfilling a childhood dream and overcoming numerous physical, mental, and emotional tests of endurance as a high school and college football player and as a high school coach. “If you ain’t crying, you ain’t trying,” is one of my well known coaching aphorisms. I can shake off the physical, mental, and emotional trials because my spiritual foundation is unshakable in Jesus Christ and my real championship ring is eternal and paid in full. 1 Corinthians 9:24 <><
Thanks to Melvin Futrell for capturing these candid moments. More deep thoughts and photos are forthcoming. We have a quick turnaround and short week to prepare for the 99th Turkey Bowl vs. Loyola Blakefield on Thanksgiving Day at 10:00am at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. A friendly, yet intense contest between the Christian Brothers (Lasallians) and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Calvert Hall vs. Loyola Blakefield respectively is America’s longest continuous Catholic high school football rivalry. Calvert Hall is looking for the twelfth win of the 2018 season to complete the winningest football season in the history of the school. The 99th Turkey Bowl will be broadcast over the air and on the internet, for the convenience of my Texas connections, by Baltimore’s WMAR-ABC2.
