If you have the opportunity to work with legendary coaches, do it. Chuck Markiewicz is a former college football player for Salisbury State, Maryland’s second all-time winningest high school Head Football Coach, a state champion, Anne Arundel County Sports Hall of Fame member, and most recently, Archbishop Spalding High School’s offensive line coach. His impact as a teacher and coach has been tremendous and is seen in the lives of numerous now grown men and women he taught and coached along with their children.
Every coaching stop for me has been enjoyable and fruitful in its own way. However, coaching at Archbishop Spalding High School is the best coaching experience I have had so far and Coach Markiewicz was a big reason for it. Happy retirement to Coach Markiewicz!
Fun fact is this. Archbishop Spalding High School’s Head Athletic Trainer Kelley Crowe pictured here was the Head Athletic Trainer at Northwood HS (Silver Spring, MD) where we worked together in 2014. Mrs. Crowe would then take the Head Athletic Trainer job at Arundel HS (Gambrills, MD) in 2015 where she worked with Coach Markiewicz who was Arundel’s longtime Head Football Coach until he left for Spalding in 2018. Mrs. Crowe proved at both schools that she is the best athletic trainer.
When the position of Head Athletic Trainer at Spalding opened in March of 2020, I immediately called Mrs. Crowe on the spot. Together with Coach Markiewicz we wrote glowing recommendations for Mrs. Crowe to the administration and we persuaded Mrs. Crowe to join us at Spalding. The three of us go way back and we reunited at Archbishop Spalding High School!
Life lesson is this. It is not about where you work. It is about with whom you work. I will take my job at Archbishop Spalding HS over any NFL job because I get to work with my people at Spalding.
